New Blogger // Empire State of Grind

Emma del Valle is not Carrie Bradshaw. She’s also not the guy in the picture staring at the camera. She’s a Bennington undergrad currently spending the semester interning in New York City. Writing about what she sees, Emma’s first day as a blogger for Apples and VCRs is today. Here’s her inaugural post…

The funny (not really) thing about living here, and by living here I don’t mean Sex and the City, mani/pedi and three Cosmos by noon living here, I mean Williamsburg, the industrial end of Brooklyn, poor filthy college student living here, is that you almost immediately start turning into a sociopathic street ogre. You stop eating, your internal monologue becomes something out of a Bret Easton Ellis novel, you growl at babies on the subway… it’s a slippery slope. Or maybe that’s just me.

Nonetheless there is something to be said for Brooklyn’s supply of wonderful things. Take, for example, Desert Island. If you like comic books (“graphic novels”, for the bourgeoise), go here. This is no overstuffed all-you-can-eat buffet; rather, it’s a small, handpicked selection of really high-quality brain candy. The best part is the guy at the register; he knows everything about everything they sell. He’ll give you the background on anything you buy, with the genuine starry-eyed enthusiasm of someone who has found his niche and resolved to cling, barnacle-like, to its soft and accommodating underbelly. I recommend that you peruse Desert Island’s selection of Cabinet issues while you’re there, if you like history/art/useless information (Hint: You do.).

In that vein, Did You Know that Dmitri Medvedev has a video blog? And it’s hilarious? And subtly arousing? Again that might just be me.

More Empire State of Grind later.
