A while back, I came across John Maloof’s blog, “Vivian Maier – Her Discovered Work”. To paraphrase a bit- originally a native of France, Ms. Maier lived in Chicago through the 1950s – 1970s, where she amassed a body of work containing 30-40,000 shots of various street scenes. Enter John- after discovering the negatives at an auction, he is now in the process of developing and posting her work on a daily basis.
I love looking at this blog. To see the faces of love, concern, joy, and confusion from a bygone era is wild. Here are some of my favorites:
From the fine folks over at The Pancake Project, comes this flour and jelly masterpiece. Wicked. Check out the rest of their pancake fueled creations here.
Subway scraps. SO cool. I really want some for the apartment. I’m not totally sure what I’d do with them, but who cares. Besides vintage subway car doors, the MTA is offering maps, controllers, side roll signs, terminal signs, tokens, globes, horns, poles, seats…basically everything short of the track.
The bits range from $25 (poles) to $500 (full subway seat…doesn’t include the cleaning that you should no doubt do). And, if that’s not good enough, everything comes with a certificate of authenticity. Neat. See the entire inventory over at the MTA website.
Ah geez, this is kinda weird. I feel old. When the sound of dial-up brings back childhood memories…and this kids have never even heard the sound…yikes.
My Dad is more web savvy than I am. I’ll admit it. Twitter, Blogger, WordPress, APIs, Cloud Computing- these are all things I first heard from him. And he knows his stuff- let’s just say he outranks me by about 4,500 Twitter followers. To be fair (to me, I guess), it is his business: both of my parents are retail and web based entrepreneurs. But through the 12 hour days, 7 days a week, I’ve always been surprised at his ability to stop on a dime and live in the moment. It’s a pretty rare thing, to be that busy and chill at the same time. So, I guess that’s why I found this video he posted on his Vimeo page so interesting. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a trip to Walmart. I like it because it doesn’t really go anywhere; it just is. Maybe I’m biased. Because it’s my Dad. Because I too, make this drive all the time. Because I’m going back home next week. Either way, watch it for yourself. See the rest of his videos here.
Charlie Fink, lead singer of Noah and the Whale, recently released an accompanying film to their last album, “The First Days of Spring.” It’s about 45 minutes long, featuring little dialogue but absolutely stunning shots of wilderness and domestic scenery. Following a story of love, loss, and death, it’s a surprisingly keen work by the British ensemble. Watch the video here, via Vimeo.
Ahhhh…I miss the 90′s. Everything was so silly, fueled by neon color schemes and wholesome rap. Pump it! Cool it! Homogenize and Pasteurize! C’mon…tell me that didn’t get stuck in your head. I’m totally in the mood to read Goosebumps, find Carmen San Diego, and watch Boy Meets World.
